HMS - Hopkinton Middle School "The Sky's The Limit" Courtyard Project, done in collaboration with the HMS Asst. Principal Mrs. Maryellen Grady and Principal Allan Keller, and the HMS Student Climate Action Committee (really the student body representatives as the client). The project involves the renovation of a currently under-utilized and unused 7,500 SF exterior courtyard, surrounded by the HMS Library and classroom wings. This open-to-sky space is the "brainchild" of the wonderful and enthusiastic Mrs. Grady, with total support from Principal Keller, the school facilities department (Mr. Al Rogers), and the local school board and administration. Programming features include new accessible access to the courtyard, with a small performing arts stage and outdoor movie-theatre space, 5 outdoor classroom spaces, larger gathering zones for dances, ceremonies, as well as student and faculty sponsored events, a frog pond and small water-feature, and night-sky observation opportunity (Astronomy & Science). Interlaced will be able bench seating, directional flow paving design, an information kiosk, as well as small trees, a lunch area, and places for quiet reading and meditation.Design is happening now (Spring 2013), with an eagerly anticipated construction start of Summer 2013. The goal is to get this space functional for the benefit of the HMS student body, prior to the start of the Fall 2013 school year. It has always been ALL ABOUT THE KIDS, and the student organizing body has and will be interactive in the whole design process.
